Partial remineralization and pH increase with the Magno cartridge (sintered dolomite)
Base material: The cartridge contains lightly sintered, granulated dolomite rock. Chemically, it is a calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2). The sintering process increases the porosity and the reactive surface of the material.
Physicochemical process: The slightly acidic reverse osmosis water (permeate) flows through the dolomite granulate. A neutralization reaction takes place. The carbonic acid (H2CO3) present in the water reacts with the alkaline calcium magnesium carbonate.
The simplified reaction equation is: CaMg(CO3)2 + 2 H2CO3 → Ca²?(aq) + Mg²?(aq) + 4 HCO3?(aq)
1. Ion release (remineralization): Through this reaction, calcium (Ca²?) and magnesium ions (Mg²?) are dissolved out of the crystal lattice of the dolomite and pass into the water. The water is selectively enriched with these two essential minerals.
2. pH increase: At the same time, the carbonic acid is neutralized and hydrogen carbonate ions (HCO3?) are formed. These ions act as a buffer and raise the pH of the water from the acidic range (often pH 5.5 -6.5) to a neutral to slightly alkaline range (typically pH 7.0 -8.5).
Result: The water is no longer demineralized but has a defined mineralization of calcium and magnesium. The pH value is stabilized and raised, which leads to a clear sensory improvement (softer, "rounder" taste) and improved physiological compatibility.
